The first J23 Careers of the semester was held this week with a full house of John’s students eager to hear from four alumni working across the legal profession. The breakfast was run by our Law Academic Mentor, Jess Millin, who guided the conversation and encouraged students to make the most of the opportunity to learn from those who have walked the path before them.

The panel - Andrew Brickhill (BAL Lawyers), Holly Johnson (National Gallery of Australia), Freya Watson (Norton Rose Fulbright), and Catherine Coles (Parker Coles Curtis), shared a wealth of advice on navigating the early stages of a career in law. They spoke candidly about making decisions on career direction, moving between different practice areas, and building networks that support both professional growth and personal wellbeing.

A highlight of the morning was hearing what each panelist loves most about their work. From helping families through challenging times, to advocating for the arts, supporting major national projects, and guiding communities through planning and environmental issues, the alumni’s stories highlighted the breadth and impact of a legal career. Students especially valued the panel’s reflections on some of their proudest professional moments, which showcased the real and lasting difference lawyers can make.

The event set a strong tone for the J23 Careers program, building connections, sharing experiences, and helping students explore the many pathways ahead.
