Students Take Action on Gender-Based Violence

Johns students are taking action to raise awareness of domestic and gender-based violence against women, with 82 letters recently sent to Members of Parliament and Senators across Australia.

Written by students as part of a new College initiative, the letters share a clear message: Australia’s government must do more to prevent violence against women and create a safer future for all.

The letter-writing campaign is the first part of 5 for the Next 50, a five-part initiative led by Student Executive members Penny, Ali, Jaz and Harriet, with support from the wider College leadership team, particularly the Student Representative Council (SRC).

The initiative marks 50 years of women at Johns while looking ahead to the next 50 years. Its focus is on helping create a future where women are safe, supported and celebrated.

“5 for the Next 50” will explore five areas of action: letter writing, fundraising, celebrating women, service and legacy.

With the first stage now complete, students are looking forward to building on the momentum and continuing the conversation across the College community.
