Generations of Johns alumni came together in Sydney to celebrate the launch of The First Chapter: History of John XXIII College (1967–1977), reconnecting with one another and reflecting on the remarkable story of the College's beginnings.
Held over lunch at the Grace Hotel, the event brought together members of the College Board, the John XXIII Ex-Residents' Association (JERA) Committee, alumni and friends of the College. It was particularly special to welcome many of the original residents and community members from the College's first decade (1967–1977), providing a rare opportunity to reconnect, share memories and celebrate the enduring friendships formed during the College's formative years.
Joining the alumni were current College President Penny Friend and student leaders Matt Callaghan, Lachlan Simmonds and Laura Penning, highlighting the strong connection between the College's founding generation and today's student community.
Head of College Jas Lincoln welcomed guests, reflecting on the importance of preserving the College's history and recognising those whose vision and commitment established a community that continues to shape students' lives today.
JERA Chair Hannah Atwell spoke about the strength of the Johns alumni community and the important role former residents continue to play in supporting the College and future generations. Looking ahead, she also reflected on the significance of the College's upcoming 60th anniversary celebrations in May 2027, encouraging alumni to remain connected as Johns prepares to celebrate six decades of community, friendship and shared history.
The highlight of the afternoon was an address by Dr Ian Walker, author of The First Chapter. Drawing on years of research through College archives, correspondence and interviews, Dr Walker introduced the book and shared some of the stories that most captivated him during the writing process. He reflected on the determination of the Dominican Order, Church leaders and the University's early supporters who worked together to establish a Catholic residential college within The Australian National University, creating a community founded on learning, faith and belonging.
For many in attendance, the afternoon was as much about reconnecting with old friends as it was celebrating the publication itself. Conversations continued long after the formal proceedings, with memories from the College's earliest years shared across generations.
The launch of The First Chapter marks an important milestone in preserving the history of the College. Now available as a digital edition, the book ensures that the stories, people and vision that shaped the College's formative years can continue to inspire future generations.
