John XXIII College was honoured to welcome alumnus Andrew Tink AM (1974-76) back to campus for a special edition of J23 Conversations, our speaker series that connects current students with inspiring alumni.

Mr Tink, a former barrister, NSW Parliamentarian, and acclaimed author, spoke with students in a lively and engaging Q&A session held in the college’s Common Room. Drawing on a distinguished career that spanned law, politics, and historical writing, he offered thoughtful reflections on leadership, public service, and the enduring importance of storytelling.

In conversation with student representative Cormac O’Callaghan, Mr Tink shared memories of his time at John XXIII College and spoke candidly about the challenges and opportunities he faced throughout his career. From navigating the legal system and parliamentary life to researching and writing political biographies, his insights resonated with students curious about life beyond college and how to forge meaningful paths of their own.

Following the session, Mr Tink also caught up with Dr Ian Walker, who is currently authoring the official history of John XXIII College. Their discussion offered valuable perspectives on the College’s formative years and the enduring influence of its community. As both a participant in and contributor to the College’s story, Mr Tink’s reflections will help shape the historical record being developed for the College’s upcoming 60th anniversary.

The College community was also pleased to host Mr Tink for lunch, where conversations continued informally with staff and students.

Mr Tink was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2014 for significant service to the people and Parliament of New South Wales, to history, and to the law. His visit marked not only a return to his college roots, but a generous sharing of wisdom with the next generation of leaders.
